To Light 1998 type C photographs: 400 x 300 mms ceramic table lamps with gold leaf and painted text from installation To Light

'To Light recalls the home, and its objects of comfort.... Affixed to the wall behind the lamps are five colour prints of domestic spaces, found in Home Beautiful and Interior Design magazines. Fereday re-photographs these as partial views, framed to create ambiguous forms. The illumination in these interiors elicits warmth and intimacy, and is doubled by the Dutch gold leaf, which lines the interior of the lampshades, and alludes to the auric value of the images. The relationships between commodity, image and desire is evident in the absence of inhabitants within the frames space. Desire is always somewhere else, ungraspable and unobtainable.'
