To Light

To Light
1998
10 ceramic table lamps with gold leaf and painted text
5 type C photographs: 400 x 300 mms

To Light recalls the home, and its objects of comfort.... Affixed to the wall behind the lamps are five colour prints of domestic spaces, found in Home Beautiful and Interior Design magazines. Fereday re-photographs these as partial views, framed to create ambiguous forms. The illumination in these interiors elicits warmth and intimacy, and is doubled by the dutch gold leaf which lines the interior of the lampshades, alluding to the auric allure of the images. The relationships between commodity, image and desire is evident in the absence of inhabitants within the frames space. Desire is always somewhere else, ungraspable and unobtainable

Individual lamps are self titled:
Nothing takes place in the image · Nothing comes to light · The past is never before us · That has been That will be · Always again the same · I read what was never written · All things are already passing away · There. Not there · Only thought resembles · Desire is never made visible.
