Ghost Story

Ghost Story
2011

Found domestic portraits with exposure anomalies due to accidental camera flare, film fog or excess flash. Such affects of light in excess are sometimes taken for evidence of ghost activity, specifically of the after-life of deceased relatives who here make a brief appearance for their loved ones being photographed.

The individual lives of these sitters are lost narratives, traced through the lingering persistence of their image in the face of visual disappearance.

'Light and its action on light-sensitive materials is what makes photography possible. But it has been Fereday’s contention that the medium obscures as much as it reveals and in this exhibition the light is shown in the act of veiling its subjects. Light is anarchic in these pictures, cutting off heads and limbs, an occult energy from the subjects themselves.'
