Research interests

Fereday’s research centres around theories of photography: its logic and ontology; its relationship to death, melancholy, memory, inner life, self-hood and the space of ‘the feminine.’ Her research often includes unorthodox references to esoteric spiritual traditions and mysticism, especially their emblematic visual archives. She delights in discovering visual resonances between previously unconnected images and artworks.

Her book, Light Out of Darkness: the origin of photography in mystery and melancholy, discovers occluded meanings in the early photographs of Nicéphore Niépce and William Henry Fox Talbot.
