Research interests

Fereday’s research centres around theories of photography: its logic and ontology; its relationship to death, melancholy, memory, inner life, self-hood and the space of ‘the feminine.’ She often engages with unorthodox spiritual traditions and mysticism, especially their esoteric visual emblems. She delights in discovering visual resonances between previously unrelated images and artworks.

Her thesis, Light Out of Darkness: the origin of photography in mystery and melancholy, explores occluded meanings in the early photographs of Nicéphore Niépce and William Henry Fox Talbot.
