'Almost every current critical and theoretical issue may be said to engage can be located, in one sense or another, within photography. Issues of authorship, subjectivity, uniqueness are built into the nature of the photographic process itself. Issues revolving around the simulacrum (authenticity and artificiality), the stereotype, and the social engendering and positioning of the viewing subject, are central to the production and functioning of the photographic image in mass-media. It could indeed be said that the photograph, as proliferative agent of visual mass communication, is the staple signifying surface of contemporary culture, and of spectacle.'
