Beautiful

Beautiful

1994
coir doormat, enamel paint
450 x 750mm
'As with her series, Anxious Objects, Fereday again applies an ambiguous quotation over a modest domestic object to transform its function. In a simple question, Beautiful converts a doormat into a statement of existential dilemma. Text in the manner of familiar signage, anticipates the object's function whilst recognising is appeal within the language of commodity. Is this a decor accessory or a trenchant statement on urban alienation? This doormat rests at the threshold of life and art, a place of hesitation between outside and in.

Entree vous!'
